Tokiwa Shokudo:

Classic Teishoku Meals Near Sugamo and Otsuka

ebi fry teishoku

Established in 1961, Tokiwa Shokudo has grown to five locations across Tokyo, with its flagship restaurant located just outside Sugamo Station on the Yamanote Line. Known for serving the local community, this long-standing eatery specializes in teishoku—traditional Japanese set meals that are hearty, comforting, and budget-friendly.

Among their most popular options are the ebi fry (fried shrimp) and mix fry sets, served with a generous dollop of tartar sauce. But the menu goes far beyond fried favorites. You’ll find everything from grilled fish to curry and stir-fries. Each set comes with miso soup and tsukemono (pickled vegetables), making it a perfectly balanced meal.

Two of its locations—Sugamo and Otsuka—are especially convenient, both located along the JR Yamanote Line. If you're spending time in Ikebukuro or visiting Sunshine City, the Otsuka branch is just a 3-minute train ride or a 15-minute walk away.

If you’re looking for a no-frills, authentic teishoku experience with a warm, local vibe, Tokiwa Shokudo is the perfect stop!

karaage and miso soup side dishes

My personal go-to is the sashimi set which changes based on what’s in season, but lately I’ve been hooked on their kimchi fried rice—it has that nostalgic, homemade taste I can never quite replicate at home. Their sides, like chicken karaage and tamagoyaki are also very delicious! Whether you're in the mood for something fried, fresh, or spicy, there's something comforting and satisfying about every dish on the menu.

Just a heads-up: the menu is entirely in Japanese, so make sure to bring your Google Translate app or be ready to point and guess—part of the fun, if you ask us. Everything we have tried so far has been a hit!
